Emergency Pantry List

The Food Industry Working Group has prepared what has been called the Emergency Pantry List, providing you with important information & advice on how to stock your pantry to ensure your household has an adequate supply of food, water and essential items to cope with a prolonged emergency situation. It is recommended that with the current Swine Influenza outbreak families should consider the effects on stock items should the outbreak become a prolonged incident.

Consider your preparation for an emergency or natural disaster - it's the smart thing to do!

An emergency incident can affect critical infrastructure and interrupt the supply of water and electricity, communication networks and transport. Some emergency situations will interrupt the supply of food and other essential items.

Emergencies, such as bushfire, flood, influenza pandemic, cyclone, storms and earthquakes, can happen anywhere and at any time of the year. They can occur with little or no warning and often cause financial, physical, environmental and psychological damage and injury and can result in loss of life.

Being prepared for emergencies can reduce their impact on you and your family. The Food Industry Working Group has prepared what has been called the Emergency Pantry List The pantry list provides you with important information & advice on how to stock your pantry to ensure your household has an adequate supply of food, water and essential items to cope with a prolonged emergency situation.

Preparing for emergencies ensures that you and your family can manage if affected by an emergency such as:

• Bushfire
• Cyclone
• Utility failure (eg. electricity, gas, water)
• Flood & storms
• Influenza pandemic
• Earthquake

While many emergencies will only extend over a few days, some incidents will disrupt the supply of critical foods and groceries. Planning for a 14-day stay at home (possibly without water and electricity) by building and rotating items in your pantry, ensures you are prepared for a wide range of circumstances.

Use the pantry list as a guide to help you meet the needs of your household and prepare for an emergency - it is the smart thing to do!
